Pool Safety in the Caribbean. A simple yet powerful statement with a mere 5 words. Pool safety is not a topic that most think of when they dream about sandy beaches and marlin fishing in the Caribbean but guess what...the Caribbean and particularly Puerto Rico has a tremendous amount of pools. While most people will contend that the yards are smaller in Puerto Rico than the average size of a yard in the United States mainland and that most pools here in Puerto Rico have a fence around to keep kids out or stalemating that "attractive nuisance" HOWEVER the reality of the statistics is another bite of a different fruit. The reality is that most of the time the pool incidents that occur are regarding the kids that live in the home and thus the fence (concrete or cyclone) is not a remedy to keep the children that live in the home or are visiting out of the pool. This is the key component that is very often overlooked. "It will never happen to me" and then it does. My kid can swim so it is not a concern (but their friends may not be able to swim). An unprotected swimming pool is an invitation for trouble. Plain and simple. Pool safety covers have increased in popularity in Puerto Rico for a couple of reasons. The first is that the value of a pool safety cover during the "off season" allows the pool to be closed with little to no maintenance all the while keeping the pool safe. As we all know if you do not have a heater on your pool, the pool is a little cool during the "winter" months of the year in Puerto Rico and many do not see the value of weekly service for their pool when it is not in use if they can simply close the pool for a couple of months. The second and lesser of the two main reasons for the pool cover is the rampant growth of the population of iguanas on the island. A Pool fence will not keep these pesky reptiles at bay. A pool net will not keep them at bay. A pool safety cover will keep them out of the pool. Will they still leave "presents" on top of the pool cover? Yes. This is easily resolved by letting the "present" dry and then simply using a hose to spray it off (it will get wet again however it will get washed off the cover easier than when new). The second option is to use a lawn blower and blow it off. Either method is certainly more sanitary than the mess that is often left in the actual pool itself. Pool fence comes in different colors When looking for pool fence, ask to see the various colors not just what the person has available .The most common colors in Puerto Rico are Beige, Brown and sometimes a combination of the two. While all black fence tends to be popular in the United States, here in Puerto Rico the housing color and size of the yard plays a role in the tendency to use a lighter color. Some may argue that is shows dirt easier however with the UV coating that the Pool Guard fence has, cleaning is as simple as a hose and broom for a light cleansing. The darker colors tend to make an area look smaller (interior and exterior designers will tell you the same about house paint especially when painting a small room, a light color will make the area feel bigger). Purchasing a home with a pool safety net when you have never owned one can be kind of an interesting process in regards to taking one off and placing it back on the pool when you are not familiar with the product at all. Pool Guard of Puerto Rico recently had a client contact them to do a safety check on the pool net as well as provide instruction as well as assistance in regards to how to use the product. Upon review of the pool net there were some areas that needed some attention. The rope in the center that is the main tensioner for the CTS (central tensioning system) had a great deal of wear and needed to be changed out. The overall condition of the product was pretty good provided the pool net was roughly six years old. A new pulley was provided for the customer's use along with the key to open the net and now the pool is once again up to pool safety standards. Pool safety should be a top concern when you purchase a home with a pool or have a pool installed in your back yard. Above ground pools, in ground pools and even hot tubs all present a potential drowning hazard if not addressed with layers of protection such as a pool fence, pool net, pool safety cover or an alarm.
"Can I enclose my patio with pool safety fence versus going around my pool?" This is a very common question we get. The answer is not so easy. As a pool safety expert we want to show the areas that the child may be able to gain access to the pool. The easy answer is there should at all times be a barrier between each door and pool. The not so easy answer is the children that may enter the pool from the neighbors side or the back of the yard (depending of cours on your layout of your yard etc.). We recently did a job in the back yard of a family that the yard backed up to a golf course. They have a back wall and they have a side wall (tall enough that a small kid cannot get over) so in this particular case, it makes perfece sense for them to have a removable pool fence around the patio with a self closing, self latching and lockable gate. The next choice was the color for them. Pool Guard of Puerto Rico has over 16 different color combinations so choosing the proper color certainly was easy given the color of the house and surroundings. Pool Guard of Puerto Rico keeps a stock of all the top colors at all times so that when you contact us, we can install your new pool safety fence in a very short period of time.

Pool Fence or in this case, dock fence is a VERY good idea especially when you have no gate leading to where the water is. Certainly having a removable pool fence has extreme advantages as you can actually remove the fence when it is not needed (loading the boat for the weekend trip or daily excursion). The fence comes in an assortment of colors and as you can see matches the color requirements of this particular marina. With 7 years of experience in pool safety in Puerto Rico, we have picked up on a pattern that most incidents with children and pools happen around the March through June time period. Why? This is probably due to new pool ownership and not having multiple layers of protection for the child/pool safety. Often a parent seems to think that they will be able to "keep and eye on the child or children so no layers are needed". This self confidence is the staging for a potential bad scenario. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a four foot removable pool fence with a self closing, self latching and lockable pool safety gate or baby gate. Alarms on all doors and windows that lead to the back yard where the pool is along with a pool alarm are all very acceptable formats of protection as long as you have more than one and preferable more than two. If your budget is a concern, then of course starting with a pool fence makes more sense than any other because it does not rely on batteries and is a four foot barrier hence making it a very tough obstacle for the child or children to get around.
