"My kids are all grown up so I am not so concerned about my kids in the pool as I am with the neighbor's kids and the leaves in my pool, what is my best option?" We have these conversations on a regular basis regarding pool safety and even keeping pools clean. The best solution for something like this is a manual pool cover. This type of product is both safe and comes with an industry leading warranty. The material used is very similiar to a trampoline. This material allows water to pass through the mesh but does not allow the dirt, leaves and debris to pass through keeping your pool cleaner and believe it or not, conserving water and chemicals all at once! Pool Fence or in this case, dock fence is a VERY good idea especially when you have no gate leading to where the water is. Certainly having a removable pool fence has extreme advantages as you can actually remove the fence when it is not needed (loading the boat for the weekend trip or daily excursion). The fence comes in an assortment of colors and as you can see matches the color requirements of this particular marina. Pool fences should be built to last. One of the many key components that Pool Guard pool fence offers is corner posts so that angles like the one illustrated in the photo here are both aesthetically pleasing and the the corner is also rigid. As you can see from this installation in Ponce, Puerto Rico the corner post has added another level of strength and the corner posts are color matched to the fence. Few things are more annoying that walking by your pool and noticing there are leaves on the bottom of the pool only to find that when you remove the leaf it has left a lasting impression that is not a positive one....A STAIN! Leaves have a tenedency to do that and in Puerto Rico there is certainly an abundance of leaves since the weather never gets cold, the trees grow year round and thus making the cleaning of the pools a year round job as well (no compaints about year round warm weather for sure!). The challenge is to protect your pool from the arch enemy...leaves. There are two answers when it comes to pool covers. The first is the pin down pool safety/leaf cover and then there is the automatic pool cover (this would be the Mercedes of pool covers or leaf defense). The prices of these products are in variance according to a couple of different aspects. The size of the pool is the first aspect, the shape of the pool (rectangle is easier than say a kidney shaped pool) and last but not least any obstructions that the pool cover has to be built a special way in order to prevent one of the straps from being placed in the very same spot as a ladder. In other words, if you have a square pool and no ladder or waterfall and things of the such, it should be fairly easy to measure, if you have a more complicated shape pool then you will need to have a professional take an AB line measurement and other critical measurements to make sure that your custom pool cover will fit exactly. The time to measure these usually takes about an hour to two hours. The data then has to be sent to the manufacturer and built. The finished product is then shipped (this may take a week or so for the company to build it and then ship) to the professional and then installed. The installation process could take as little as four hours and some of the more complex covers may take up to a full day or a little more (pools that have waterfalls, multiple layers etc.).
Pool safety should always be on the minds of pool owners or potential pool owners. The interesting aspect that has come to light here in Puerto Rico recently is the number of homes that are owned by the banks and no very little security to keep people out of the pool. Now certainly the style of neigbhorhoods in Puerto Rico have walls around them in most cases but not always are locked in 400 different ways. The challenge that becomes obvious when viewing one of these properties is that if you have a child and you are viewing the property with a broker, that child could easily fall into a pool that is either VERY nasty or has no water at all which can have just as bad of results. Certainly having some form of security on your pool or around your pool is recommended whether it is a pool fence, a pool net, pool cover or even an automatic pool cover...keep your pool safe and pool responsibly.
Pool fence is kind of like having seatbelts in a car. Certainly children do not like to wear seatbelts and I can even remember when it was optional for adults and kids to wear a seatbelt in the car. In many states pool fence is optional including Puerto Rico. The old saying "hindsight is 20/20" comes to mind when I think about the comparison of topics because you never know when you will get in an accident while driving and the same applies to pool safety. You never really know when your child or a neighbors child will be in your yard (if you are home or not) and you need that security. The best bet is to have that layer of protection because you really never know when you are going to need it. Nobody wants hindsight to be 20/20 when it comes to the safety of a child.
